Every observation rating requires cited evidence from the lesson observed, hedged feedback is replaced with a specific action, and the teacher holds a documented right of reply.
Why most classroom observation changes nothing
The typical Ghanaian school observation is a head of department at the back once a term, a paragraph afterwards, and a file. The teacher performs a lesson they would not normally teach, everyone knows it, and the record has no effect on practice.
- Too rare. One observation a term produces an anecdote. Ten short ones produce a trend and, more importantly, a working relationship in which being observed is normal.
- Too vague. “Good lesson, improve class control” gives a teacher nothing to do on Monday.
- Too entangled with judgement. Where observation feeds directly into contract renewal, teachers perform rather than teach.
How Edves does it
Evidence is required
An observer cannot save a rating without attaching evidence from the lesson observed — what was said, what learners did, what was on the board. A rating with no evidence does not save. This single constraint is the difference between an observation record and a form.
Hedging is stripped out
Draft feedback is checked for the language that makes observation useless — “try to improve”, “generally satisfactory but” — and the observer is prompted to state the specific action instead.
Short and frequent
Built for brief walkthroughs conducted often rather than a formal termly observation, which is also more realistic for a head of department carrying a full timetable.
The teacher can reply
Every record carries a teacher response field that becomes part of the record. This is what makes teachers willing to be observed honestly, and what makes a record defensible if disputed.
NTC licence and CPD records
Licence maintenance requires continuing professional development, and Ghana currently has a live licensing issue: the NTC has warned that teachers without valid professional licences will not be permitted to remain in the Ghana Education Service beyond December 2026, following a survey reporting more than 42,000 teachers without professional qualifications.
Edves keeps a staff register with licence status, number, expiry and renewal date, alerts before expiry rather than after, tracks qualification progress for teachers on a route to licensing, and maintains a continuous CPD record covering internal and external development.
The deployment view — which classes and subjects are covered by unlicensed staff — is what turns a compliance list into a staffing plan. See NTC licensing and CPD.
What school leadership gets
- Practice trends by teacher, subject, department and campus.
- Observer consistency. Where two observers score comparable lessons differently, that variance is surfaced. In most schools this is the first thing worth fixing and almost never examined.
- Cycle coverage — who has been observed and who has not.
- Link to teaching — observation records connect to the lessons and indicators from Pedagogy with AI.
- Inspection evidence — lesson observation is an element of the NaSIA framework. See NaSIA.
Recruitment and induction
Teacher turnover is high in much of the Ghanaian private sector, and each departure costs a term of continuity. Edves supports the hiring pipeline — applications, screening, subject-knowledge testing, demonstration lesson records — and carries a new teacher’s induction and early observation history from day one.
Where AI is and is not used
Stating this plainly matters, because staff will ask. AI drafts feedback language, surfaces relevant rubric areas from the observer’s evidence notes, flags hedged phrasing and suggests coaching resources. It does not assign ratings, does not make employment recommendations, and does not observe. A human observer is in the room and a human observer scores.
Sequencing
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Load the school’s existing observation form; do not change the instrument first |
| 2 | Calibrate observers — two or three score the same lesson and compare |
| 3 | Short walkthroughs only, framed explicitly as developmental |
| 4 | Introduce trend reporting once there is enough data to mean something |
| 5 | Connect to appraisal only after staff trust the developmental use |
Schools that begin at stage five get compliance and no change in practice.
