That link means weak examination performance can be traced back to specific indicators that were never taught or never assessed, rather than to a subject in general.
What a Ghanaian school manages
| Assessment | Body | Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| School-Based Assessment | School, per NaCCA and GES policy | Continuous | Contributes to terminal and certification outcomes |
| BECE | WAEC | End of JHS | Basic Education Certificate; senior high placement |
| WASSCE | WAEC | End of SHS | School leaving certificate; tertiary admission |
Under the reformed senior high model, learners also take a Common Core assessment at the end of SHS1 before specialising, and national standard assessments are replacing continuous class tests at basic level. Confirm current arrangements with NaCCA, GES and WAEC.
The problem with how most schools prepare
Preparation in most Ghanaian schools means past questions. Learners work through several years of papers, mock scores improve, and everyone concludes readiness has improved.
Often it has not. What improved is familiarity with questions already asked, which is different from mastery of the indicators being examined. A cohort can post strong mock results built on recognition and underperform when the phrasing changes.
The distinction is diagnostic granularity. A mock result says a learner scored 54 in Integrated Science. An indicator-tagged result says the learner can describe the process but cannot interpret the diagram. Only the second changes Monday.
How Edves approaches it
- Items tagged to NaCCA learning indicators, so weak performance points at a specific expectation — see curriculum.
- Format matched to the paper, because a learner who can answer an objective question frequently cannot answer the theory version of the same content.
- School-authored items in the same tagged structure as provided banks, so internal mocks and external practice report against the same references.
- Cohort analytics showing which indicators an entire class has not secured, so revision is targeted rather than general.
- Offline tolerance, because a computer-based session that collapses when power or network drops is worse than not running one.
Preparing honestly
Examination preparation software does not raise results by itself, and any vendor implying otherwise is selling a story. What it does is show where teaching has not landed while there is still time, and remove enough administrative work that teachers have the hours to act.
Schools that see the largest change are those using diagnostic data to reallocate teaching time in the year before the examination year, not those intensifying drilling in the final term.
Candidate records
Registration data — exact name order as it must appear on the certificate, date of birth, subject combinations, photographs — is held in the form registration requires and validated at entry. Name errors on a WAEC certificate are expensive and slow to correct, and they almost always originate in the school’s own records.
