WASSCE

WASSCE preparation

The certificate that governs tertiary admission — and a preparation problem that is mostly a diagnosis problem.

Direct answer
Edves supports WASSCE preparation with item banks tagged to learning indicators, practice in both objective and theory formats, cohort analytics and candidate registration records.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is conducted by WAEC at the end of senior high school and is the principal qualification for tertiary admission in Ghana.

Policy accurate as at July 2026. Ghana’s curriculum, teacher licensing and data protection frameworks are all mid-reform. Confirm the current position with the Ministry of Education, NaCCA, GES, NaSIA, NTC or the Data Protection Commission before acting on it. What WASSCE is

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is conducted by WAEC at the end of senior high school. It is the principal school-leaving qualification in Ghana and the basis on which tertiary admission is decided. Confirm current subject requirements, grading and admission thresholds with WAEC and the receiving institutions.

Where schools lose marks that were available

Four patterns recur, and none of them is about learners not knowing the subject.

  • Objective-only preparation. Learners drill multiple-choice papers because they mark themselves, then meet a theory paper they have practised a fraction as much. Marks go to structure and expression rather than knowledge.
  • Untested coverage. Content appears in schemes of learning and never in any assessment. Nobody discovers the gap until the examination.
  • Late diagnosis. Weakness is identified in the SHS3 mock, when the teaching time to fix it no longer exists. It was identifiable in SHS1.
  • Aggregate reporting. A class average conceals that a third of the class cannot do one specific thing, because the other two-thirds can.

All four are data problems before they are teaching problems.

How Edves supports WASSCE preparation

Indicator-tagged item banks

Items tagged to learning indicators and to cognitive demand, not just to topic, so a weak result points at a specific expectation. See SHS curriculum.

Both paper formats

Practice covers objective and theory formats, with theory responses rubric-assisted and teacher-moderated. A learner who can select the right answer about a concept but cannot construct an argument about it is at risk, and only theory practice surfaces that.

Practical and alternative-to-practical

Science practical papers reward specific procedural conventions — tabulation, significant figures, precautions, sources of error — that are learnable and routinely under-taught. Practice covers these explicitly rather than treating practical papers as an extension of theory.

Cohort analytics

Reports show which indicators an entire class has not secured, ranked by frequency in past examinations, so SHS2 and SHS3 revision targets what will actually appear. Individual reports show each candidate’s likely position subject by subject.

Early warning

Because assessment data accumulates from SHS1, candidates trending below the threshold for their intended tertiary route are identifiable in SHS2, when intervention is still possible. For most schools this is the single highest-value output.

The new curriculum complication

Cohorts moving through the new senior high curriculum introduced from November 2024 are being prepared under a different structure and assessment model from the one their teachers know well. Where a school is running the new curriculum internally and preparing for a WAEC examination in transition, the two need tracking separately rather than merged.

Edves tracks internal assessment against the new curriculum indicators alongside examination-format practice, so a school can see both the curriculum picture and the examination readiness picture without conflating them.

Candidate registration and records

Registration data is held in the form WAEC requires and validated at entry, and results are recorded against the learner for transcripts, leaving records and year-on-year cohort analysis.

What this does not do

No platform raises WASSCE results by itself. What indicator-level data does is show where teaching has not landed while there is time, and remove enough administrative work that teachers have the hours to act on it. Schools should set expectations with families accordingly.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What is WASSCE?

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by WAEC at the end of senior high school. It is the principal school-leaving qualification in Ghana and the basis for tertiary admission.

Why do schools lose available marks?

Four recurring patterns: objective-only preparation leaving learners under-practised on theory papers, content taught but never assessed, weakness diagnosed in the SHS3 mock when there is no time to fix it, and class averages that conceal a specific gap affecting a minority of learners.

Does Edves cover science practical papers?

Yes. Practical and alternative-to-practical preparation covers the procedural conventions those papers reward — tabulation, significant figures, precautions and sources of error — which are learnable and commonly under-taught.

How does the new SHS curriculum affect WASSCE preparation?

Cohorts under the curriculum introduced from November 2024 are taught under a different structure and assessment model from the one their teachers know well. Edves tracks internal assessment against the new curriculum indicators alongside examination-format practice, so the curriculum picture and examination readiness are not conflated.

Can Edves identify candidates at risk early?

Yes. Because assessment data accumulates from SHS1, candidates trending below the threshold for their intended tertiary route are identifiable in SHS2, when intervention is still possible.
