The BECE is conducted by WAEC at the end of junior high school and drives senior high placement. The pioneer cohort taught under the Common Core Programme sat it in July and August 2024.
What the BECE decides
The Basic Education Certificate Examination is conducted by the West African Examinations Council at the end of junior high school. Aggregate performance drives placement into senior high school, which in Ghana means it drives which school, which programme, and to a considerable extent which future.

Why the BECE deserves more attention than it gets
Most secondary-phase anxiety in Ghana points at WASSCE. The BECE receives comparatively less, which is a strategic error for two reasons.
Placement. A learner placed into a science programme on a marginal aggregate, in a school where science carries prestige and families expect it, spends three years in subjects they were never ready for and produces the WASSCE result that was predictable at JHS3.
Foundations. Weakness in JHS English and Mathematics does not resolve itself in senior high; it compounds. Identifying it at B8 is intervention. Identifying it at SHS3 is damage assessment.

The most valuable output. Reports show each learner’s indicator-level mastery profile across subjects, supporting a placement conversation grounded in three years of evidence rather than one aggregate.
The evidence does not decide the conversation, but it changes it. A head teacher explaining to a family why a learner is better suited to a business or technical programme is in a considerably stronger position holding a mastery record than holding a mark.
Early identification
Learners whose English or Mathematics trajectory puts their certification at risk are identifiable from B7 data. Acting then is intervention; acting at JHS3 is triage.
The transition to senior high
Because Edves holds the learner record continuously across the phase boundary, the mastery profile that informed a placement remains visible to the SHS1 teachers who inherit the learner. In most schools that handover happens through a mark sheet and a conversation, and the detail is lost precisely when it would be most useful.
Candidate registration
Registration data is held in the form WAEC requires and validated at entry — exact name order, date of birth, subject combinations, photographs. Name errors on a certificate are expensive and slow to correct and almost always originate in the school’s own records.
